Isn't KFX implemented using multiple files? I seem to remember reading this somewhere as well. If this is true, that might be why they are still using the older single-file format for downloads. Web browsers tend to respond stubbornly to multiple files trying to force themselves to download in one action. I guess Amazon could zip them all up into an archive and do it that way. But I think they're more likely to just get rid of downloads to your computer completely. That would be killing two birds with one stone - getting rid of the downloads, and the customer base that used them in one fell swoop.

Unfortunately I also think this is more likely.

Agreed. Amazon has already changed things for downloads (depending on how and what you are downloading). There's nothing to say that Amazon won't ever change anything else.
