Is this possibly something in the headers of the files or other declarations? epub2 vs epub3 is an easy example, but I wouldn't expect that to be it. But, there are other declarations such as namespaces that might. I know I've had some strange behaviour with some wrong declarations (valid elsewhere but not in an epub). I usually expect the calibre conversion to clean them up, but, if they do get through, there might be something wrong.
Another thought is the interface language. I don't know if it should affect the rendering, but, it could be used somewhere to make a choice when language isn't set elsewhere. |

The only thing that looks even possibly relevant is the KePub has both xml:lang="fr" and lang="fr" set on the top-level <html> element; the ePub only sets xml:lang="fr". But my understanding is this is supposed to be allowed since "lang" is a built-in property of the <html> element and "xml:lang" is added by the inclusion of xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml", and either should be sufficient to override the interface language. And in the KePub content.opf also sets the language, but again as I understand it the per-file language that's set should override that.
Though, in the Unicode world that applies (or should apply!) because the XML encoding and Content-Type element are set to UTF-8, the interface language should only matter for the app to choose what translation to use for displayed app strings. 0x65 and 0x202F are the same Unicode character no matter what language you're using. Assuming your font supports it. Though it's weird it apparently falls back to a different font in some cases and not in others. And there's no font family specified, except for one specific class that isn't applicable here sets the font family to "WINGDINGS". |

Is there any way to get this plugin to stop aggressively compressing images?

It's not the plugin that's at fault. It's your settings in Calibre. You need to go into Calibre's preferences and set your output profiles to tablet. Tablet doesn't change the images. All the others might.

What JSWolf said, this plugin doesn’t touch images. Calibre has output profiles which attempts to optimize outputs for the device, if you don’t want that try the tablet profile as suggested and if that doesn’t work ask about it in the main calibre forum.

If he doesn't want to try the Tablet profile, then there's nothing that can be done.

The only reason I noticed it, though, is because images appeared more heavily compressed in KePUB than MOBI or AZW (for my Kindle readers). Hopefully the tablet setting will fix it. |

Tablet will fix this. It will tell Calibre not to reduce images to 800x600. The Tablet setting leaves the images alone without any resizing or recompressing.

Depending on which Kindle and Kobo devices you have, they may have different resolutions. The images may even be the same size but look worse at a higher pixel density, if that’s a difference between the devices. On top of that, Kindle, Kobo ePub, and Kobo KePub are three different rendering engines that may process and optimize images differently. And, more generally than your question, if you don’t compare images that are actually the same size on all three, you may find that you’re thinking images look way worse just because you’re running into this, where a book has a high-resolution image on one but a compressed image on another. |

It pretty much says it on the conversion dialog. And it includes the screen size, so the option is for the original Kobo eReader and the WiFi only. Otherwise, it is in the help.

This appears to be broken in the latest version of Calibre?
