We had a family friend who confused/conflated the two expressions "running all over tarnation" and "running all over creation" and would instead say "I've been running all over carnation today". I always found that uproariously funny.

Translation didnt' make it right the first time I heard this in English, but ever since I have been saying "half a dozen in one, half a dozen in the other".

That's nice, because I think the expression is "Six of one, half dozen of the other". I like your mistranslated version much better!

Then he tells me the story of how he asks his class, what are the odds of getting a head or tail on the flip of this coin? A lot of the class answer right the first time, 50/50. He asked the question again, what are the odds of getting a head or tail on the second toss, and he says the class doesn't have a clue. |

I had a friend who'd always remind pregnant women that 50% of the children born every year are Chinese...

Be careful mentioning any animals, actual or fictional, in this place. They become supporting characters and avatars.
What I'm really looking for in this thread are actual expressions that you or your family has "customized". For example, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". My dad had a neighbor fanatical about having the "best lawn". (Yes, we're Texans.) This neighbor would actually spread manure to feed his lawn. So the expression became: "The grass is always greener but at least we don't smell like sh.." |
