Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle is £2 on Amazon UK
Quote:
A new heart-pounding story about what it takes to succeed in a world that wants you dead.

Misha is a jaded scriptwriter working in Hollywood, and he's seen it all. All the toxic personalities and coverups, the structural obstructions to reform, even dead actors brought back to screen by CGI – and finally, maybe, the hint of change.

But having just been nominated for his first Oscar, Misha is pressured by his producers to kill off a gay character in the upcoming season finale—"for the algorithm"—on the same day he witnesses to gruesome death-by-piano of treasured animator (and notorious creep) Raymond Nelson.

Success, it seems, isn't the answer to everything.

With the help of his best friend and paranoid database queen, Tara, and his boyfriend, Zeke, Misha has face down his traumatic childhood and past mistakes. But in a paranoid industry that thinks nothing of killing off talent, it's not so simple to find a way to do what's right.

The Vanishing by Bentley Little is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

Little's stuff doesn't go on sale too often.

Quote:
In Beverly Hills, a wealthy CEO goes on a bloody rampage and videotapes the slaughter. He leaves behind a chilling cryptic message...“This is where it begins.”

Miles away, an alarmed mother receives an unsettling letter from her estranged husband, stained with bloody fingerprints.

And all across California, children are becoming affected by a monstrous change—and their parents, by a mounting fear.

Social worker Carrie Daniels and reporter Brian Howells are determined to find the link between these baffling crimes. But they shouldn’t look too deeply into the lives of the victims. It’s quite dark there. And God help them, they won’t like what they find.

Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Short story collection. Translated by Megan McDowell.
The novel Our Share of Night is also on sale.
Quote:
Thrilling and terrifying, Things We Lost in the Fire takes the reader into a world of sharp-toothed children and young girls racked by desire, where demons lurk beneath the river and stolen skulls litter the pavements. A world where the secrets half-buried under Argentina's terrible dictatorship rise up to haunt the present day, and where women, exhausted by a plague of violence, find that their only path out lies through the flames...

Mr. X by Peter Straub is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US. I've been watching this one for a long time and it has never dropped this low before.

I don't know where this ranks in Straub's canon, but I loved it when I first read it. Straub explores Lovecraft. Highly recommended by me from twenty-five years ago. And I always loved the Stephen King blurb for this one.

Quote:
“Ghastly, hide-your-eyes horror; when Peter Straub turns on all jets, no one in the scream factory can equal him.”—Stephen King

Every year on his birthday, Ned Dunstan has a paralyzing seizure in which he is forced to witness scenes of ruthless slaughter perpetrated by a mysterious figure in black whom he calls Mr. X.

Now, with his birthday fast approaching, Ned has been drawn back to his hometown of Edgerton, Illinois, by a premonition that his mother is dying. On her deathbed, she imparts to him the name of his long-absent father and warns him that he is in grave danger. Despite her foreboding, he embarks on a search through Edgerton’s past for the truth behind his own identity and that of his entirely fantastic family.

But when Ned becomes the lead suspect in three violent deaths, he begins to realize that he is not the only one who has come home. . . .

My reading log tells me I read this in 2009. I have absolutely no recollection of it. But I love Straub and I'm going to grab it so that I can experience it again for the very first time. Thanks!

I don't remember the bulk of the story or the characters. But I remember the beginning, end and some bits in the middle. I do remember the book had more of a southern gothic vibe than Lovecraft, though there is a lot of focus on Lovecraft's writings in the story.

Nestlings by Nat Cassidy is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
[...] harnesses the creeping paranoia of Rosemary's Baby and the urban horror of Salem's Lot, set in an exclusive New York City residential building.

Ana and Reid needed a lucky break.

The horrifically complicated birth of their first child has left Ana paralyzed, bitter, and struggling: with mobility, with her relationship with Reid, with resentment for her baby. That's about to change with the words any New Yorker would love to hear—affordable housing lottery.

They've won an apartment in the Deptford, one of Manhattan's most revered buildings with beautiful vistas of Central Park and stunning architecture.

Reid dismisses disturbing events and Ana’s deep unease and paranoia as the price of living in New York—people are odd—but he can't explain the needle-like bite marks on the baby.
