Yes, and uploading them to your private storage space on a cloud server is then no copyright violation either, as you're not deliberately sharing them (if the owner of the server shares your private stuff, then it's the owner who will be responsible).

However it's not a backup as the entirety of Dropbox or of Google Drive could be geoblocked by law, or turned off. It's a convenient service that through thoughtless greed, the operator is making illegal (civil law not criminal law). Note to Google, Dropbox etc, criminla violations have fixed maximum tarrifs. Civil infractions have no limit to penalty..
Of course I'm not keeping an only copy there.

The difference is that some provider's free service T&Cs literally say "we are scraping all your stuff for our AI", and others (oddly pay only services) claim total privacy, so they are liable to civil action from customers and rights holders if it's not private.

Most free services have a cost.

That may be. I have a paid Dropbox account, in any case. And I'm still certain that it's the provider who would be sued for sharing the stuff on their servers, not the users.

While I keep an Off-Site backup in the cloud, that is only after:

Export from Calibre->tar->gpg.

No lousy ISP is going to learn what books I keep in my library thank you very much.

I do incremental backups via FreeFileSync, as exporting my whole library every time I make changes would take far too much time. I couldn't care less about anyone knowing what books I have.

But you live in a Democratic Country. Some miles east you might care.

Of course, I've never said otherwise. I know perfectly well that in many countries you must be careful what you reveal about yourself and your interests.

Are there any other nine or 10 inch readers? I should be considering?
I really don't want one that has the scribe/annotation/pen feature never be able to utilise it and it would just be a waste

You won't find any. They all have such features. There is no basic 10.3" Reader. You just have to go with one that's got Android because otherwise you won't be able to install the two reading apps you want.
