It finally stopped s**wing, so I got out for a walk; that's it for me for today. Sloppy and treacherous underfoot. The good news is that the sun should be out tomorrow and my driveway slopes south, so I'm going to let it melt on its own. Back to my books.

Too icy to walk here - patchy stuff disguised as puddles - so perched on the stationary bike whilst watching NFL play-off game ... indoor cycling is so boring

Just had the jury duty day from/in hell - started off at 8:30 am with a 20 minute wait in the cold outside the building. Then parked in the Jury Assembly Room for 5 hours. They actually began playing DVDs for us to watch - I learned so much about the Everglades and Rocky Mountains flora & fauna. Then sent out to lunch - it seems Durham county exchanges judges with neighboring counties - and we got the new guy today! Not really sure why nothing at all happened this morning.
Finally herded the entire pool (via 6 elevators) into the courtroom at 2 pm, where jury empaneling didn't begin until 2:30. The case was a first degree murder trial for a crime that happened 3 years ago. The actual crime scene was out of business and long gone, but they were trying the case. One of the jurors went off about the irony of trying to convict someone of a felony when the incoming POTUS was a convicted felon. Then another juror had a medication reminder go off on her phone - which the judge promptly confiscated. Then another juror tried to get out of serving since he was a contractor who was the sole earner for his family and had ongoing projects with deadlines - the DA approved his removal but the judge denied it. There was absolute silence in the room after he boomed "denied". I was on the jury until the defense asked jurors if any juror, or family member, had been the victim of a violent crime. Since I had had an uncle gunned down in his driveway in an alleged gang drive by shooting, I was dismissed by the defense. Had to wait in the courtroom until the trial was adjourned at 5 pm before I could get my "get out of jury purgatory" white card and get home. Pixie cat was NOT happy with me. What a total waste of a day .... |
