Most people won't go to the trouble of scanning / photographing pages and then editing the format to create their own epub. Nor would they accept receiving one from someone else as that would deny the seller/author the income

Piracy is essentially theft from a creator. Thankfully, I believe the number of people reading a pirated book is very small in proportion to the total in the book world

I was not aware of that. The only OCRed version I saw was from the UK version and that was around 3 months after the release date.
