Not always feasible. For example, I'm reading a historical mystery series right now. The books are fairly long, with a word count of 150,000 - 160,000, and every book has only 12 chapters. So every chapter is basically as long as a novella. I don't often have the time to finish a chapter before I have to leave off for one reason or another. And while I read only at home and so can easily use the same Kobo again if I want to, that's not so easy for people who take a smaller reader out of the house with them.

In that case, it's not going to be easy to finish the chapter before switching devices. But for short enough chapters, it might be easy enough.

I completed a Kobo survey sometime within the last year, part of which was asking about how much I was interested in various future features. One possibility that they listed was synching reading positions on sideloaded books.

Obviously, that doesn't mean that it will ever be done, but at least they are considering it.

But Kobo Sync will never work outside of Kobo ereaders and apps and any sync that's not using books sold by the sync provider is huge privacy and security no-no, unless it's somehow peer-to-peer (which is merely difficult and not impossible).

I mostly read on a Kobo Sage, but might read on my phone using Pocketbook app and till recently was using a Sony PRS-350 and a button only elongated 4.7″ epub eink reader when out.

When I see the thread topic, I think of Overdrive eBooks.
