Um... many, many people in the world have no access to/cannot afford clean drinking water, proper healthcare, decent waste removal and so on. Should we all go without, from solidarity?
That is not the correct way to solve poverty issues, for sure. Last edited by Sirtel; Yesterday at 10:38 PM. |

There are multiple issues that are being mixed together here. Amazon’s KFX format splits books into multiple files so that you can begin reading a book while the rest of it is still downloading. That seems like a good idea to me.
However they also reduce the quality of images based on the device to which the books is being delivered, with e-ink Kindles receiving the lowest resolution. That I dislike because it means that you cannot zoom into an image and get the fine details on those devices. |

If Amazon really cared about customers, they could offer an option to deliver the correct eBook with unaltered images or deliver a modified version with lower resolution images. That would mean anyone who feels they cannot wait for the correct version of the eBook can get the smaller altered version.

In the US, the cost of the equipment (including installation) starts at $349 and the per month cost is $120. That is just way too much for most. Last edited by JSWolf; Today at 06:09 AM. |

The hardware is €349 here, so roughly the same (~$359). Our monthly cost is only about $55, though; no idea why it's that much cheaper here. Yeah, it's a significant outlay up front and I can imagine that not everybody can afford that. Still, it's cheap for what it does, even at $120, but 'cheap' doesn't always equate to 'little money'.

FWIW 1/3 of my Cable (Internet only) is Taxes and fees. Some of those fees are them passing THEIR cost of doing business thru to the end customer. BTW 'Fees' are Sales Taxable in California. We have Tax on Taxes. Vehicle fuels have Federal excise Tax, State excise tax and we pay local Sales Tax on the total of those + the fuel. "Excise Tax is really a FEE because it is flat rate per gallon, not a % like sales tax" is their justification. |
