Den kongetro greve af Chanteleine drager sammen med sin tro tjener Kernan ud som en af lederne af det kontrarevolutionære oprør i Vendée i 1793. Da han vender tilbage er han på flugt, hans ejendom er lagt i ruiner, hans hustru er myrdet af Republikkens tropper under ledelse af en af hans tidligere tjenere, Karval, der hader familien, og hans datter Marie er dømt til døden af Revolutionstribunalet i byen Quimper.

Greven er ved at opgive ævred, men Kernan vil have hævn over Karval, og de drager sammen afsted for at opsøge ham og måske redde Marie.
