Now that it is done I bought a Kindle, and now I am trying to find a way to get my book on it without going through Amazon. I've googled and found tips, but none work for me. (I'm using an older version of calibra on a Win 7 machine.) Seems to me it should be as easy as copying the epub file to the correct directory on the Kindle.

Convert it to azw3 and copy it to the documents folder on your Kindle. Kindles cannot read epub files.
