Yes, you can swipe and/or use page buttons. Calibre and Kobo play very nicely together, but Kobo won't work for amazon books, if they have DRM. I'd honestly recommend Calibre either way it's great for backup and transferring books to either reader. I'm not sure why would you need to move books from devices instead of downloading them from site? eBook reader blog has a comparison between those two ereaders.

A bit of conversion with calibre and DeDRM and you can read your ebooks on pretty much any platform. For me, calibre and Kobo have unmatched capability when it comes to managing metadata.

Yes, I've bought ebooks from Amazon for over a decade and now only read them on Kobo, mostly the Sage. My Paperwhite registered to Amazon is rarely even turned on. However it's possible to deDRM Amazon ebooks bought for the App, it's just more complicated to setup. Also used Kobo store and Smashwords (who are DRM free).

I probably did not explain well... I connected my 2 Nooks to Calibre. I can see the Nook device books on Calibre, but I cannot seem to do anything with them on Calibre. I probably just do not understand what to do or how to do it. I thought I had to download books from the device to Calibre to back them up. Since my devices no longer let me download books (as of June 2024), I have no access to the old purchases except with Nook web. I do not have Nook App that was removed from Microsoft store.

Thank you for letting me know about the buttons and swiping.

I have no idea how to add a 2nd quote here....

To DNSB- I cannot even use the quote thing here, so Calibre may be asking too much of me! I will look for step by step instructions. I worry about the major players discontinuing the apps so that we have to buy their ereaders. Buying a Boox would not help me if the Kindle app and Nook app went away. Best solution seems to be a KOBO if I can learn how Calibre works.

To JS Wolf- Sorry about the trouble. This was my first post, and I did not know that j.p.s. was responsible for smacking people on the hands when they were just trying to help newbies.

To j.p.s.- Sorry. I will try to delete mine. I did not know about what you don't want posted on this website. But did you really type "You did it first"? Sort of like " I will take my ball and go home." Unfortunate for me that in my first post, I irritated you. Not intentially though. And I don't know anything about "boosting their presence."

To Quoth- Thank you. I did not know that about Smashwords. Very helpful.

Another question... If I buy a Kobo, will I need to do a lot to set it up? I have been reading about adding "patches" and I assume the patches are to help the Kobo run better for the owner. It may be better for me to get an Android like Onyx Boox, but I really liked the idea of repairing and adding new batteries to the 3 newest Kobos. (I Fix It) I love the Right to Repair movement.

And only the Boox will let me have access to my undownloaded Nook books, right? I refuse to buy another Nook or their books since they took away my right to download. I know the devices were old, but they did not have to stop the downloading part....just stop upgrading it and let it die a natural life. My batteries still lasted a couple of weeks on a charge.

Thanks, everyone. I may have more questions.

The majority read ebooks on phones and tablets.
Amazon has over 90% of English language market.

Amazon won't discontinue the apps.

Kobo would only discontinue the app if they closed the bookstore and only made ereaders.

Barnes & Noble would more likely discontinue the Nook, than the app, and might ditch ebooks completely.

The Windows / Mac apps are unimportant as almost no-one reads ebooks on a computer/laptop, but on phones, tablets and ereaders. One original reason for them was lack of WiFi on ereader or home, so when Sony had a bookshop you downloaded on PC and managed with App. They didn't have wifi models for long before transferring bookshop customers to Kobo and then ceasing ereaders. The Sony DPT models were not ereaders but PDF tablets (Digital paper Tablets).

Any eink that has Android and can install the Nook app will work, but Boox is maybe the best Android eink ereader. In general the non-Android eink ereaders are better.

Also there are matt screen phones and tablets better than color eink and nearly as good as mono eink and all will run the Nook app.

However the Android Nook App isn't available in most countries because Barnes & Noble only sells ebooks to those with a USA address. The Nook was supported for a while in the UK.
So the actual eink Nook is of little use if you don't have a USA address, though free titles might download.

You are best to remove DRM from all your existing Nook titles, or only use a matt screen tablet for the Nook and in the future use other suppliers.

Then you have choice of Kobo, Pocketbook or Onyx Boox for ebooks. The Kobo works best with Calibre and the largest of those companies. Kobo is Canadian and owned by Japanese Rakuten and has a bookshop. Pocketbook is Ukrainian company in Switzerland with a bookshop.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...eader&hl=en_US

Onyx is a small Chinese company doing ereaders only. The other Chinese companies are smaller (Bigme, Meebook formerly Boyue) and others.

Amazon's Kindle is massive and change down the back of the sofa for Amazon, but it's in some respects a tighter walled garden than Apple, especially for the Scribe.

Also, Boox, like all Android after 3.x, uses USB MTP which is horrible.

Barnes & Noble can't seem to make up their mind on supporting ebooks. They could more easily ditch the Nook reader and only have an app, or ditch ebooks entirely. Waterstones is owned by the same people and ditched the Nook and ebooks.·

To add multiple quotes, use the multiquote button (the little one to the right of the Quote button and then use the Quote button on the last message.

As for JS Wolf, more that many people here do not like GoodeReader (they have earned the nickname BadeReader so such things as posting baseless click bait such as the many times they reported a Voyage 2 and 'borrowing' content without crediting the original authors.)

No need to take your ball and go home. Basically, j.p.s. did not want the links since people will click on them.

Ouch. I assumed Nook still lets customers download the books. Calibre can still help you, just figure out how to use it. Once you set it up, it should work without problems. Amazon still has transfer books via USB so at least those can be downloaded.
Kobo can work right out of the box, just need to register. Patches can be installed later if you want, but it's personal preference.
