Replace book
Sometimes I'll sideload a book to my Kobo from Calibre using the extended plugin, then find I need to edit the book. I'll edit in Calibre, attach the Kobo and send the revised version. When I open the book in Kobo, I'll get: oops there's a problem.
I can delete the book on the Kobo using its GUI and then send it, but I'm wondering if there's a better way. |

The Kobo Touch Extended Driver options, in the Collections, Covers and Uploads tab, at the very bottom, has a check mark option you an turn off called "Do not Treat replacement books as new books". Basically, the Calibre Driver tries to slip a replacement book in place without the Kobo noticing, thus preserving your reading position, bookmarks and annotations. This works if edits are limited to fixing a typo or updating some formatting in the CSS. Unfortunately, as seen here, it will not work if the Table of Contents is changed or if a change is made to how files are split. (and maybe if whole paragraphs are added/removed.)

It sounds as if the answer is to turn off "Do not Treat replacement books as new books". My usual edit is because the font is too small (CSS formatting), something I notice quickly, so losing TOC, etc. is not a problem. I only edit other things once I start due to CSS issues. I suppose the alternative is not to edit anything else and leave the option checked. I'm I understanding correctly? Last edited by foosion; 08-04-2024 at 08:09 AM. |

You could also check and edit the formatting before you send the book to your Kobo in the first place, but few people want to bother with that.
I do edit my books before, but sometimes I still notice something I want to fix while reading. I delete the book using Calibre (not directly from Kobo) and send the new version. I also have "Do not treat..." permanently unchecked, but then I don't bookmark, highlight or annotate, and I'm fine with finding my reading position manually. |

I'm not one of the few that bother. So far in my Kobo ownership, the only thing I've cared about is formatting and it's easier for me to notice issues on device.
"I don't bookmark, highlight or annotate, and I'm fine with finding my reading position manually." Me too. Uncheck it is. |

I annotate, but I Use Kobo Utilities to copy them to a text file. I can easily find where I was.
In fact I've found it best to remove the ebook (only in Calibre), add the revised ebook and if there is extra meta-data, to reconnect. I've found that otherwise the cover can vanish till a reboot, or bookmarking / last position / annotation can break. |
