Exclamation EPUB Double Cover Issue

Hi! Thanks for the awesome plugin. However, I'm encountering an issue when converting an EPUB to KFX. After the conversion, there are two cover pages in the book. Is there a way to fix this?

Try selecting the option "Use cover from source file" in the Metadata tab of the conversion dialog. If that fixes the problem then it was caused by calibre leaving the original cover behind when attempting to replace it with a new one. If that does not do it then posting a conversion log may help with diagnosing the cause of the problem.

I've resolved the issue by selecting the "Mark as cover page" option in the Edit Book menu and applying it to the actual page that contains the book cover.

Version 2.10.0 - 20 Sep 2024

Detect Kindle Previewer versions up to 3.87.0.

Report the minimum Kindle firmware version (min_kindle_version) required to render the file produced based on the KFX features it contains in the Metadata section of the conversion log.

Improve reporting in the conversion log when a conversion is terminated because it took to long to complete.

Look for both "wine64" and "wine" executables when running under Linux.

Thank you for the update!
Could be possible by any chance to implement the change I was proposing in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ostcount=1556?

It is a minor thing actually but could help to not clutter the system and keep wine apps organized. That would be to have a dialog to specify the actual location of the chosen WINEPREFIX for Kindle Previewer.

Thanks again!

The plugin currently looks for a WINEPREFIX environment variable and if that is not defined it looks in the .wine folder of the users home directory. You should be able to set that variable as needed before using the plugin.

If you are looking for the plugin to do something else you will need to lay it out in more detail. I am not a Linux user or developer.

I see, well given that WINEPREFIX is just a directory, the idea was to have a WINEPREFIX dialog in the plugin so that is always picked up automatically, with no need to specify it manually everytime. That can be error prone, but well mine is just an idea I don't know if it's plausible.

I suppose the plugin starts a shell that calls Wine, then the WINEPREFIX can be automatically set by the plugin at that point.

Ok. I will add the ability to configure a plugin tweak that will override the WINEPREFIX used by the KFX Output plugin when launching the Kindle Previewer.

Version 2.11.0 - 06 Oct 2024

Add "kfx_output_wineprefix" plugin tweak that will override the default WINEPREFIX when launching the Kindle Previewer under Linux.

Thank you.

The option is visible in the conversion dialog options only under Linux, otherwise it's not displayed?

Also would like to ask about Kindle Previewer version. I see:
Version 3.87.0 (Aug 16, 2024) is recommended for best results. (Versions below 3.38.0 are not compatible with this plugin. Versions newer than 3.87.0 have not been tested and might not be compatible.)

but latest known working version for Linux is 3.76.0. So it should be working even if it is stated that the plugin will not work with versions of Kindle Previewer below 3.38?

It does not appear in any dialog. See the calibre documentation on plugin tweaks to see how they are set in calibre’s preferences.

I will add a note that the recommendation to use the latest version does not apply to Linux.

So, I tried with Wine-wow64, using a WINEPREFIX to install Kindle Previewer. I tried to convert the book listed as a working example in this thread. But for some reason it fails to convert and Kindle Previewer retries many time and at the end it stops.

Here is the log https://gist.github.com/steakhutzeee...39241aadfd8c81

In there I see mentions to "experimental wow64 mode". That means that it's a problem? Or just an info?

I am not a Linux or Wine user so my knowledge is limited. However the message:

0220:err:environ:init_peb starting L"Z:\\home\\steakhutzeee\\.wineprefixes\\kindle_pr eviewer\\dosdevices\\c:\\users\\steakhutzeee\\AppD ata\\Local\\Amazon\\Kindle Previewer 3\\lib\\fc\\bin\\MobiContentDumper.exe" in experimental wow64 mode

seems significant to me. MobiContentDumper is one of several programs that the Kindle Previewer launches as part of its conversion process. Something seems to be going wrong with it, but what exactly I cannot say.

I was able to use send-to-kindle to send and convert an epub to my kindle, so avoiding using WINE at all. Then I was also able to import the kfx only from the kindle into caliibre, so ignoring the other files of the book. Is this procedure correct? I was able to generate wordwise with the worddumb plugin and load the book back to the kindle. Only thing I noted is that I'm unable to read/edit the kfx book with calibre, only the epub.
