I'm oddly attached to this reader so I am babying it more now than when I got it. Now I hardly use the buttons. Unfortunately what has broken were the little notched rubber cord things holding the SD card door to the device.

Oh, yeah. Out of my six devices I don't think there can be more than two that still have that intact, and I have been really careful after it happened the first time.

Scotch tape the flap on. Just to keep dust out.

Generally there is not much need to swap out the card once you're up and reading. For development work, that's another matter

Depending on how steady your hand is and how high your patience you can make your own vinyl skin as sheets of the stuff are sold in tubes for like $20-25 I've found them in Walmart, craft stores, and also automotive stores
Awesome, that looks perfect! No added bulk or weight. Many thanks! I was searching for something like that, but never hit the right keywords for the NST.

The Armor-All treatment was never intended as a one-and-done, just as when using in your car. It's a maintenance approach which doesn't involve strenuous abrasion of the already compromised material which could just as easily crack or fall apart if worked on to vigorously. My $0.02.
The Armor-All worked great when it was first applied, but the NST is now with my dad, who is in his 80s. He doesn't have the interest or patience to apply it, so I'd have to keep up with it.

The back of the Nook is most affected by the stickiness. The buttons aren't bad at all, so I've left them alone.

I've never cared for cases, but I'm almost tempted to put my 7.8" Nook in one of those vinyl sleeves to protect it. I've had it since 2020, am very happy with it and hate to think of the soft finish deteriorating. Part of what I love about the Nook is how nice it feels in my hand compared to a tablet or phone, so I'm not sure how I'd take to a skin. My dad, on the other hand, would have no issues with one.

I just pressed it back into place gave it a couple shakes and its stayed on. I'm not going to try other configs so it's permanently closed.

Happy to have found you a case solution RWTS! Amazon I think just had the black and white sleeves but Ebay had a pink and green option too.

I actually like the feel of the official Nook case for the 7.8. They are a textured soft rubbery feeling that's pretty much like holding a bare Nook. B&N still sells them in store and online too.

I kept coming up with book-style covers, padded pouch sleeves and vinyl sleeves for every model but the NST.

Now I need to stop by B&N to take a look.

I lucked out when I bought my NST the seller included a case for free. It's slightly annoying as it doesn't have a loop or band to keep it closed so it flaps about. If you look on page 2 or three of this thread Nmyshkin gave me links to two NST cases still available for purchase. They're not the Nook brand cases though.

The last I checked at my B&N they had the solid color cases for the 7.8 still in the store. The prints were sold out but reliably available on ebay for not much more than what B&N sold them.

Wait...what? I was just going over the thread and I surely missed this when it was posted.

If the band around the faceplate is not black.....can you still read the model number from the back shell (down at the bottom)?

Sure. Its BNRV300. And now I appreciate that the new cases have a cutout for that info.

My first Nook was an NST with a white band as well. If I remember correctly, it was marketed as a limited edition for Christmas (or maybe just Black Friday) one year. I know that I bought it on Black Friday, but I can't remember what year. Probably 2011, but it might have been 2012.

Editing to add an eBay link with some good pictures: https://www.ebay.com/itm/396135664691?

No problems at all. I did stretch the tape a bit on one side and it has contracted about 1mm, but it's not enough to make me do anything about it. I keep it in a case, the case B&N sold for it BITD so the condition of the back sticky or no, isn't an issue. The case coating is flaking off. I was thinking book binding tape might work on it. Duct tape would not be right, IMHO. As long as the battery holds out, my NST will remain in use as my secondary ereader.

The White Band NST was Christmas 2011, a month after I bought my NST.

Regarding the firmware. It has never frozen up or crashed and restarted like my Libra 2 has done, and done more than once.

Ah, so you have the tape just on the front. I had a brain fart and didn't register the bezel part. Probably because I'm more worried about the back. Happy the electric tape is working so well. Lots of great ideas on this thread!

That white trim is sleek. I'm surprised B&N hasn't done more with color exteriors. The pink Nook seemed to be very popular, with people still looking to snag one today. Seems to be an easy way to drive some talk and online excitement for their eReaders.

I thought about getting a pearl pink one but unclaimed baggage had a great price on a like new glow4 I couldn't say no. If they do make another colored e reader I'd hope they make a clear case to go with it though.
