At least I got an OverDrive Support Case 03518817 response. If/when I get any resolution, I'll let you know. Although, I do not have much confidence that I will get a satisfactory response any time soon. Some research confirms that they (overdrive) had some certificate validation problems that can cause page loading errors.

OverDrive seems to have fixed something because Safari on my High Sierra Mac can now load OverDrive web pages like before AND OverDrive for Mac is working again!

I feel duly chastised for my lack of faith in thinking the problem was intentional on OverDrive's part

That's great!. I did not expect OverDrive to fix the problem so quickly. Just a few days after I got the OverDrive Support Case Number for the "No internet connection..." problem. I also have success today downloading MP3 audiobook files onto my iMac running macos version 10.13.6, High Sierra.

If you did need to run another OS to get Overdrive working, Windows is it because it works. You cannot guarantee that it will work on Linux. More aspects of eBook management work better on Windows then Linux.
