so it looks like no one has reported it and code that depends on S/N doesn't know how to handle it. That could explain the problems. I've never heard of the JB working but not MRPI, but that doesn't mean anything.

What's meant by S/N prefix? I was asked for the 4th to 6th digits - the first four are what appear in that wiki list mine being B0D4 i.e.

Your posts imply that you are trying to install everything with MRPI.

KUAL extensions just need to be unzipped into /mnt/us/extensions

mergen3107's request matches the relatively new knowledge that only those locations
matter. S/N decoding was empirically derived. In the early days it was thought that the
first 4 charcters defined the model and that worked OK. As the number of kindle models increased, that was increased to first 6. Looks like PW2 is from the era when first 4
(3 and 4 really) were enough. So looks like mergen3107 was off by 1.

So you indeed have a PW2.

My understanding is that MRPI takes *.bin files placed in the /mnt/us/mrpackages folder and deletes them from there after being installed (successfully or not) using KUAL>Helper+>Install MR Packages. KUAL extensions themselves are simple directory structures containing menu items and scripts, dropped into /mnt/us/extensions - right?

I don't think any packages from *.bin files have been accepted so far. The watchthis JB wasn't packaged like that and all the other mods (like Kterm) have been installed as extensions. I just tried to install the screensaver hack as a MR package and get the same results as with USBNetwork - i.e. silent fail. Without retracing all my steps to this JB one-by-one, I'm not sure if any have silently failed in a similar way.

I'm now wondering if (and how) to wipe the Kindle and start over?

Seems correct. I don't think I've ever installed anything except KUAL extensions after I have JB + MRPI + hotfix.

I think that you should PM NiLuJe and ask him to review this thread. Maybe he has some insight into what went wrong and what to try.

I think that the PW2 is special in that you can downgrade to earlier firmware with much easier jailbreak methods, so you might want to read some of the PW2 specific threads.

If you are sure that you want to "wipe the Kindle and start over", then you can reset the kindle then restart (reboot) a couple of times. The reset will remove the JB, all user content and settings and delete databases, etc. from /var. The reboots remove all traces of the hotfix.

The lack of log file implies a filesystem/storage issue, as you cannot reach the screen shown without a log being created .

And the lack of log file means I can't tell you what's happening unless you already had USBNet access, so, catch-22 .

So, yeah, my vote would be for a factory reset. With the caveat that if it's dying storage, that might kill it dead for good.

You could probably check your storage by seeing if files stay after a restart.
If storage is problematic, any changes (say, content of MyClippings.txt after making new highlights/notes/bookmarks in Kindle Reader) will be lost after a restart.
