You're already going through all the work. I would highly recommend removing the DRM. What is the downside?

The upside is that you will still have access to books you paid for if, say, B&N decides to cut Nook or something along those lines happens.

ZodWallop, I have no idea what I have done since I do not have an eReader yet. All I know is that I could not open hundreds of books on Calibre. Then I added the correct plugin, and all but 14 books opened on Calibre. I deleted those 14 and added them back to Callibre and they can be opened now.

I assume that they are not ready to be put on an eReader yet. Maybe I can only read them on Calibre.

I wish I could find Calibre for Dummies! I am still having trouble with the basics like multiple authors for a boxed set and how to organize my books by genre. The ebook for help is not much help for basic stuff.

If you can read them in the calibre viewer, you can read them on any ereader that supports epub.

As to multiple authors: enter them in the author field as First Name Last Name & First Name Last Name & First Name Last Name (without any commas). The author_sort field should correctly autopopulate from that.

It looks like you've "liberated" your Nook books and can now read them on any reader that supports ePubs (basically every reader except Kindles, and it's not hard to convert for Kindles). As Sirtel mentions, reading them in Calibre's viewer is the test and means you can read them anywhere.

Not quite right. The calibre viewer is Chrome based and very forgiving of errors. Most renderers in ereaders are a lot stricter in their requirements.

I meant the DRM issue - the viewer doesn't open books with DRM, so if the OP can open them there, they should also open elsewhere.

Personally, I don't check for errors in my ebooks and I've yet to encounter a book I couldn't read on my Kobos. Doesn't mean such books don't exist, but they don't seem to be a frequent occurrence.

Great, thank you. The author sort was the problem. I did not know it could autopopulate.

RCentros- "As Sirtel mentions, reading them in Calibre's viewer is the test and means you can read them anywhere." It was so easy...too easy, so I thought I still had so much to do.

So, if I want to put the Nook for Windows app on my new computer, I cannot just transfer it from my old PC to my new PC, right? I think it has to be downloaded directly.

The same thing with downloading Calibre into the new PC. I guess the library (data) can be transferred though.

Thanks! I feel like I am getting somewhere.

You can also back up the B&N hash code created in DeDRM and copy it to your new computer. The backup (and restore) feature is built into the DeDRM plugin.

Ok. So I have to download Calibre on the new PC. Do I need to download that plugin again? And Nook for Windows app?

And how do I back up the hash code? Do I need it? Thanks.

If you've "liberated" all your Nook eBooks and don't plan on buying any more from B&N then, no, you don't need the plugin (for Nook eBooks anyhow). The same goes for the Nook App — not needed unless you plan to buy more eBooks from Barnes & Noble. (But you'll probably want the DeDRM plugin for DRM books bought from other sellers.)

Just go back to Calibre -> Preferences -> Plugins -> Show Only User Installed Plugins -> Click the little arrow beside File Type (to open it) -> Highlight DeDRM -> Click Customize Plugin (on the bottom of the screen) -> Click ADE PassHash (B&N) eBooks -> Highlight the Hash file -> Click the little blue Floppy Disk icon -> Name and Save the *.b64 file.

To install the hash file on the new computer basically do everything the same, except instead of saving the hash file, choose "Import the Existing Key file" (the one you saved with a *.b64 extension). That should be it. By using this process I was able to move the Hash "Key file" to my Linux machine. (I still have to download the books with the Nook App in Windows, however.)

Good luck.

But the Nook for Windows app works just fine.

Edit: Just to be clear. The original Nook for PC program is different than the Nook for Windows app. The old Nook for PC program does NOT work. The Nook for Windows app does.
I downloaded the nook for Windows app from the Windows Store and it did not work on Windows 11 but it did work on Windows 10.

This is incorrect for calibre 7. I can open an ePub with DRM in the viewer outside of the main calibre GUI and it opening in the viewer no problem. But that ePub still has DRM. I'm thinking that somehow the viewer is linking to DeDRM and the DRM is removed as the viewer is dealing with it. BUt not on the actual file.

You cannot open that eBook in the editor if it has DRM.

For ePub, you can use Quality Check to see they have DRM.

Ah yes, I forgot that. But I guess if the file is in Calibre and you open it from there, then the DRM has been removed in any case?

But better to run Quality Check to be sure, yes.

If the DRM has not been removed for some reason but can be removed, the viewer will show the eBook. The editor won't show the eBook if it has DRM so to do the test, use the editor if it's KF8.

Yeah, but with a couple thousand books like the OP has, opening every single one in the editor would take a lot of time. Another way is to do a bulk conversion (from epub to epub or from azw3 to epub) - books with DRM won't be converted.
