Have you seen the Tales of Tremaine series by R. R. Virdi (starting with "The First Binding")?

Some like it because it has similarities to Patrick Rothfuss -- and some like it on its own terms. (It's a fantasy inspired by South Asian settings.) Others are accusing it of being a "copy" of "The Kingkiller Chronicle." This series is being published by the same publisher (Tor), so it's highly unlikely that they would pay this guy to plagiarize one of their authors.

Anyway, if you're upset about Patrick Rothfuss, maybe you'll want to give this one a try. There are already two books out in the series!

Looks like the Discworld Humble Bundle has returned. Reposting for anyone who missed it the first time:

https://www.humblebundle.com/books/t...ore_bookbundle

I might try a standalone topic, too, since a great deal of posters were disappointed that they missed it the first go-round.

Not a bad deal, but it's a faff to get for those of us not in the US. Plus, it's one of the redeem through Kobo.com bundles. I've done it before, but it's an extra fiddle...

In the UK, Janny Wurts' Curse of the Mistwraith is Apple's Free Book of the Week, if you have an Apple device with the Books app. (But will be tied to Apple hardware, so you're maybe still better off paying.)

Power of Three by Diana Wynne Jones is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Was on my wishlist. Here's a recommendation by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
Quote:
Ayna could predict the future.
Cari could find what was lost.
Gair thought he was ordinary.

The three children of Gest, the chief of Garholt, know the perils of the Moor on which they live. The Dorig, their people's enemies, are cold-blooded, fierce underwater creatures who terrify anyone unlucky enough to happen upon them. The Giants are dangerous and violent.

But it's not until their home is invaded that Gair learns of a dying curse that endangers all three peoples of the Moor. A curse that ordinary Gair, with the help of his extraordinary brother and sister, may be able to break, but only at the most dreadful risk to all three, and to the Moor itself.

Hi

Hello Everyone, Laura Kirwan’s UF series is a refreshing take with a 50+ protagonist, offering a unique perspective in the genre. The first book is currently free, and the second and third are on sale for just $0.99 on Kindle. I’ve read and enjoyed the first two installments, and highly recommend grabbing this deal.

I enjoyed them when I read them some years ago. I just wish she'd write more.

Again Dangerous Visions by various authors (compiled/edited by Harlan Ellison) is on sale for $1.99 from the usual vendors, B&N oddly excluded:

Quote:

A follow up to the original groundbreaking collection, Again, Dangerous Visions features forty-six short stories from giants of the science fiction genre.

Grand Master of the Science Fiction Writers of America and winner of countless awards—including the Hugo, Nebula, Edgar Allan Poe, and Bram Stoker—Harlan Ellison proved once more that he was both unpredictable and irrepressible in this second collection of innovative science fiction. Again, Dangerous Visions—the middle installment in a planned three anthology series—includes award-winning stories from incomparable writers such as Ursula K. Le Guin, Gene Wolfe, Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Piers Anthony, Dean Koontz, and James Tiptree, among many others.

Unprecedented and electrifying, Again, Dangerous Visions cemented Harlan Ellison’s legacy as the ultimate sci-fi anthologist.
The original Dangerous Visions compilation went on sale back in May. Looks like these are ramping up for the release of the final posthumous volume, The Last Dangerous Visions, due out in October.

The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain by Sofia Samatar is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Novella. Was on my wishlist.
Quote:
A mystical, revolutionary space adventure for the exhausted dreamer in this brilliant science fiction novella tackling the carceral state and violence embedded in the ivory tower.

The boy was raised as one of the Chained, condemned to toil in the bowels of a mining ship out among the stars. His whole world changes—literally—when he is yanked “upstairs” and informed he has been given an opportunity to be educated at the ship’s university alongside the elite.

Overwhelmed and alone, the boy forms a bond with the woman he comes to know as “the professor,” a weary idealist and descendent of the Chained who has spent her career striving for validation from her more senior colleagues, only to fall short at every turn.

Together, the boy and the woman will embark on a transformative journey to grasp the design of the chains that fetter them both—and are the key to breaking free.

Thank you! I picked up the first one last May. eReaderIQ doesn't yet realize this one is on sale.

I'll need to look up an article on Final. I know Ellison had a raft of stories lined up, but since everything took so long, some authors published elsewhere while others died. So how did they decide what to include at this point?

J. Michael Straczynski is the executor of Harlan's estate and took over the project to get the book published. All this info is discussed on its Wikipedia page.

The Necessary Beggar by Susan Palwick is $0.75 on Amazon.com
This was given away on Tor.com in 2019, so you might already have it.
This new edition has an introduction by Jo Walton, which you can read in the preview.
Quote:
Susan Palwick, author of the remarkable Flying in Place, now returns with a compelling new novel of a family cast out of an idyllic realm, learning to live in our own troubled world. With its richly imagined portrayal of a lost culture, complete with poetry and fables, traditions and customs, and its searing yet sympathetic view of own society as seen through new eyes, The Necessary Beggar is an compelling examination of humanity and the redemptive power of love, in the spirit of Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed and Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.

Lémabantunk, the Glorious City, is a place of peace and plenty, of festivals and flowers, bejeweled streets and glittering waterfalls. But it is also a land of severe justice. Darroti, a young merchant, has been accused of an unforgiveable crime - the brutal murder a highborn woman. Now, in keeping with the customs of their world, his entire family must share in his punishment - exile to the unknown world that lies beyond a mysterious gate.

Passing through that gate, and grieving for the life they leave behind, Darroti and his family find themselves in a harsh and hostile land - America just a few years hence, a country under attack in a world torn by hatred and warfare. Unable to explain their origin, they are rapidly remanded to an internment camp in the Nevada desert, along with thousands of other refugees. There they endeavor to make sense of this ill-fated land where strange gods are worshipped, and living things like flowers and insects are not respected.

After Darroti, unable to bear his disgrace, takes his life, the rest of the family escapes to the outside world. There, each tries to cope in their own way. Timbor, the head of the clan, troubled by the restless spirit of his departed son who comes to him in dreams, does his best to preserve the old ways, and avoid conflict with the outsiders. His eldest son Masofo, who calls himself Max, is lured by the worldly temptations of this new world, while his second son, Erolorit, strives to make a decent life for his family.

But it is Timor's granddaughter, Zamatryna, who is the quickest to adjust to this strange new world. It is she who is the first to learn its language, to adopt its customs, to accept this place as her new home. And, as the strain of adapting themselves to this new life begins to tear the family apart, it is Zama, sustained by the extraordinary love of an ordinary young man, who finds a way to heal their grief and give them new hope.
