That's a good idea to wait before downloading.

I did some checking and only found 1 price match request that was rejected. That was to a book from Google. And I do automatically take a screenshot when I am wanting a match on a short term deal.

I could fake a screenshot but I suspect that the vast majority of Kobo's customers do not have those skills.

Under the Eye of the Big Bird by Hiromi Kawakami is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Translated by Asa Yoneda. Was on several 2024 highlight lists. This is a mosaic novel composed of short stories.
Review by Niall Harrison on Locus
Quote:
From one of Japan's most brilliant and sensitive contemporary novelists, this speculative fiction masterpiece envisions an Earth where humans are nearing extinction, and rewrites our understanding of reproduction, ecology, evolution, artificial intelligence, communal life, creation, love, and the future of humanity.

In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of "Mothers." Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings--but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world.

Unfolding over fourteen interconnected episodes spanning geological eons, at once technical and pastoral, mournful and utopic, Under the Eye of the Big Bird presents an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it.

Today there is a book on Amazon for 1.99 but Kobo is 7.99. It's too late in the day to try for the price match with offices closed. I'm not willing to take that risk.

I am taking screenshots of the competing price. I think waiting to download until the refund arrives is a good idea. I'll do that in future. But £3.95 (Kobo with price match) instead of £4.34 (Amazon) or £11.99 (Kobo), as in my latest purchase, is well worth doing.

But it sounds like refusal to price-match is rare.

The books are supposed to match on ISBN, publisher and publication date. Amazon you'll need to try and find an ISBN - they don't exactly make it visible. If you're lucky, it's in the preview. I have seen it right down the page as well. If the covers match, along with the publisher and publication date, then you should get the match.

Note you've got up to 7 days to submit a request.
