Dealing with Kindle ebooks in calibre

I remember reading this, but could not find anywhere (or anybody) that said why this was done, but I suspect Amazon were updating the security on their servers (probably to require TLS 1.2) which meant that older devices could longer access amazon's webservers securely.

From their store or from your Kindle library? Last I checked, the latter still worked (I don't remember exactly when it was, though).

I have to confess I don't remember the details to that extend. I soft of lost interest after going through the list of affected devices and mine was not included.

Well, I just tried. Downloading an already purchased book from my Kindle library via wifi still works on my Kindle 4, no Download & Transfer needed. Kindle Store doesn't work.

That said, there are a couple of old models with only 3G, no wifi, so they would need D&T for downloading any books, even those already purchased.

I knew Whispernet (cell service) was dropped because there are no CARRIERS for that old type of cell service

My Kindle Touch can download eBooks from Amazon.

That is odd. Maybe try buying Star Trek eBook from eBooks.com and see what you get.
