If you didn't experience this problem on older firmware, you could also try downgrading, but probably one or more books is to blame (aside from Kobo's poor error handling).
eBooks should not have any technical errors.

Jon, I'm going to have to bill you for a new keyboard since I sprayed coffee over my keyboard when I read that statement.

It wou/ld be worthwhile knowing as much as we can about these books.

Are they originallty kepubs from the Kobo store or converted ePubs?

Whats is the provenance of these books?

image handling is one large difference between the two engines on the Kobo. With keoyb's one an click on an image to zoom it; this action is not supported on the ePub engine,

They're library epub books downloaded via Adobe Digital Editions and fixed to allow sideloading.

Oddly, if you have your Adobe ID setup on your Kobo, you can sideload directly from ADE though that will deliver an epub format ebook.

If the library you are using uses Overdrive, you can set up your Kobo with Overdrive so your loans will automatically be synced to your Kobo from Kobo's store which will deliver a kepub format ebook.

If by "fixed", you mean you have removed the DRM which also removes the return date, that is pretty much ebook piracy, IMNSHO.

I've sideloaded many books from my mac onto my Kobo Clara BW in the past. I don't know what happened today; maybe firmware update or something. but now, when I connect the kobo to my Mac, I'm unable to eject it after moving epub files onto the drive. Force ejecting works, but no books appear on the device. I've already factory reset and manually reset the device tonight but neither has solved this problem.

Have you checked that Spotlight or another program is not trying to index the files on your Kobo?

I updated my mac to macOS 15.1 and this issue disappeared. However, I'm still unable to import new books to my e-reader. I've tried both moving the epubs manually to the KOBOeReader drive, and using Calibre to "send to device". I then eject the e-reader, and the e-reader's screen shows a message saying that it's importing new content. But to no avail. Books don't show up. Has anyone encountered this?

Where on your Kobo ereader's exposed storage are you placing the books? When you reconnect your Kobo to your Mac, are you able to browse the exposed storage and see the ebooks? Placing them in the root of the exposed storage is not recommended since the number of directory entries is limited. Create a directory (I use eBooks) to store them. In the KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended driver, I use the following save template :

Code:
eBooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}
So basically, store the books in eBooks in a directory created from the first author sort value for the book with the filename created from the title and the first author name. i.e. eBooks/Flint, Eric/Mother of Demons - Eric Flint.epub

Limiting to the first author sort/author is simply to keep the file paths and names shorter.

Another item to try is to remove the two calibre files in the root of the exposed storage (driveinfo.calibre & metadata.calibre), safely ejecting, reconnecting and seeing if calibre recreates them when you connect.

Does Kobo Utilities report your database as being ok? Kobo Utilites => Database => Check the device database.

Install the Kobo Utilities plugin and when you run calibe, plug in your Kobo and use KU to check that the database is not corrupt.
