I`d just like to forward an experience that I just have made: While tapping on the footnote in the text on my Kobo (with Kepub format), there appears a pop-up with the adequate note and back. But trying the same on my Tolino, tapping on the footnote in the text opens the whole HTML-page with the Endnotes. I can jump back to the text, that's not the problem. It's only strange that the tap does not specify the exact footnote.
No problem, I only want you to know. |

But, the renderer that Kobo uses for kepubs takes a guess. Based on the relative location of the source and the destination, the size of the destination and some other things, it can decide the link is a footnote and display the text that is at the destination in the popup. It is not perfect. If the book is an epub3 and the footnotes are done with the appropriate semantic, it is more accurate. I don't know if this plugin does that. |

@davidfor: thank you for clarifying this! I shall do some testing on it.

I realized that a simple epub2 to epub3 conversion in Calibre doesn't change the behaviour in this point. But I also read elsewhere that, if one wants to benefit of the epub3 features concerning footnotes, there were deeper going measures necessary. Bur I don't know how to do.

Pop-up notes and whole footnote-HTML page
I have a problem similar to the one I reported in #46. However, it now only affects the Kobo Clara 2E and one and the same book (epub2.0; in the reader in KEPUB format using the KoboTouchExtended plug-in, v. 3.6.11) that I am currently working on: When I press on a footnote, a pop-up appears with the respective footnote preview. This works up to footnote [12]. From footnote [13] onwards (there are only 14 footnotes in total), I am also referred to the footnotes; however, no pop-up window opens, but the entire HTML page with the footnotes appears. The back link works perfectly. The problem persists after I have run the plug-in a second time. What surprises me is that the formatting is the same each time, like this:
Code:
<p>»Wie heiß …!«, rief Dona Gabriela, indem sie mit dem Winken ihres Fächers den ganzen <i>donaire</i><a class="noteanchor" id="bodyftn11" href="chapter27.xhtml#ftn11">[11]</a> einer Spanierin affektierte. »Oh!
<p class="note" id="ftn11"><a href="chapter14.xhtml#bodyftn11" class="noteSymbol">11</a> <i>Donaire</i> (span.): typisch spanische Grazie (d. Übers.).</p> <p class="note" id="ftn12"><a href="chapter14.xhtml#bodyftn12" class="noteSymbol">12</a> Man bedenke, dass im Monat Juli in Brasilien tiefster Winter herrscht (d. Übers.).</p> <p class="note" id="ftn13"><a href="chapter17.xhtml#bodyftn13" class="noteSymbol">13</a> <i>Voltarete</i>: ein Kartenspiel (d. Übers.).</p> <p class="note" id="ftn14"><a href="chapter18.xhtml#bodyftn14" Plug-in v. 0.3.3, Sigil v. 2.3.0, Windows 10 64 bit. Might you be running into the size limit of 5000 characters when you near the end of the file? I seem to remember that being mentioned in the Kobo Labs GitHub Kobo ePub Guidelines document.

But, the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that the culprit might be the Kobo itself. Although working reliably in general, there has been a firmware update recently. I use the Kobo Patcher, and as there were no "official" patches to that update, I used a workaround offered by a member hereabout, containing in a recourse to the latest patches. This works as well, but there were some error messages notified. I suppose that this behaviour is one of these disfunctionalities. What can be done? Nothing, I guess, except wait for an official Patch release. |
