George Orwell’s Best-Known Work Available As A Free Audiobook With Actor Matt Smith
Quote:
Actor Matt Smith, who starred as Doctor Who, has narrated the role of protagonist Winston Smith in an audiobook of George Orwell’s best-known novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The free audiobook, which is now available via Spotify and Apple podcasts, has been released to coincide with recent research* for digital security specialist Avast.

Avast asked people already familiar with Orwell’s book if they thought the hyper-surveillance themes of Orwell’s book are coming true today. More than 82% said they agreed and 69% of those said they were concerned that their online activity might being monitored by the sites and apps they use.

The copyright of Orwell’s best-known work expired this year and this enabled Avast to release the original version with all the date references changed to 2021. This was done to contextualise the novel into a modern setting and highlights the complexities and dangers of today’s online surveillance society. Twenty Twenty-One reveals the similarities between our modern, connected lives and many of the hyper-surveillance themes that Orwell predicted more than 70 years ago.

If you live in the UK you can listen to the 2021 audiobook, featuring Matt Smith as Winston Smith, via Spotify and Apple podcasts. A version is also available as a digital book via Kindle and Kobo, priced at just 99p, with all proceeds going to the Orwell Foundation.
