Kobo Libra/Clara colour: microSD card or eMMC?

Hi,

Title says it all. Does anyone know whether the new Kobos have eMMCs or plain microSD cards on their PCB?

Thanks a lot

Until the FCC drops the information blackout on the Libra Colour or April 30 arrives and some brave soul pops their Libra Colour open, your guess is as good as anyone elses.

Note that the new Kobos are supposed to be easier to replace parts, so you might not have to be that brave to open the case.

I'm hoping some of those brave souls, if they find a µSD card, will take it out, generate an image and make it available for anyone who needs one in the future.

Isn't there a way to fully image a micro SD card while it is still inside booted-up / running Kobo reader? Using CLI tools / SSH or whatever?

You can probably just use dd using CLI tools:
Code:
dd if=/dev/ORIGIN_DISK of=/dev/PLACE-TO-WRITE bs=64K conv=noerror,sync

There is an old thread "(semi)automatic dump of Kobo firmware on a SD card" https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=212474

The thread is more than ten years old. Do the scripts still work on current Kobo devices?

It won't work because for it to work, you need an SD card slot which for any Kobo after the Aura H2O does not have.

There's a thread on Reddit of the Libra Colour internals, and it has an eMMC instead of an SD.

Now all we need is confirmation on the Clara Colour/BW.

iFixit just released some disassembly instructions and replacement parts from their website. It looks to me that the Kobo Libra Color and the Kobo Clara Color does not have an SD card slot.

So we can be fairly certain that the Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW use eMMC storage so no µSD card images for them.

What I found most interesting is that all 3 boards use the same CPU (MT8113TAAV) though that may be iffy since the Clara Colour and Clara BW motherboards seem to be identical.

Is there a reason the Calibre motherboards would not be the same?

A couple of items make me feel that the images are of a single motherboard.

The Clara Colour is listed as having a 2GHz dual core processor while the Clara BW is listed as having a 1GHz processor and the processors in the Clara Colour and Clara BW have the same part number listing as does the Libra Colour.

The board serial number for both the images are the same (41C015825).

Of course, I might be wrong but I tend to the belief that my conclusion that both images are of a Clara Colour motherboard is correct.
