50 Shades is erotic romance and not all will agree it was badly written. I have read the series it has its good parts and bad parts. When I first read it I thought it was bad but I've since read much worse after the boom in Romance to copy 50 Shades. Not all erotic romance can be labelled like 50 Shades. Lisa Renee Jones Inside Out series is just brilliant. It mixes mystery, Suspense and erotic love scenes. It's how Erotic Romance should be done.

I have no idea what Love Story you are referring to. Romance is such a broad genre it includes everything from inspiration to erotic romance. Not all romances have sex in them. There is something for everyone no matter your tastes.

Never heard of it. Not sure if it's a romance. Romance has a happy ending. Books like say Nicholas Sparks are love stories. Of course these days most romances have a cliffhanger and you have to read several books till the couple gets their happily ever after.

Interesting. A very famous movie was made from that book starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw. I guess by the definition you gave, it wouldn't be considered a Romance, since it definitely doesn't have a happy ending.

It's ok, though..."Love means never having to say you're sorry"

Ah chick flick. I'm not really a fan of those sappy movies. Yes I know I love reading romance but it bores me to watch it. I'm more of an action flick or sci fi fan. Although I met my husband because of the Princess Bride movie which is one of my all time favorites.

I read that you made that up. Doesn't make it true. (Doesn't make it not true either. It just means someone claimed it's true.)

Take that as you will.

I've probably seen it. My mom made me watch those types of movies growing up. I just don't remember it. I grew up in the late 80s.

Young Adult, in most bookshops and libraries, is broken down into similar genres as the adult (non-sexual) books. You'll typically have a non-fiction section (sometimes this will be broken down further into biography, health, self improvement, etc), general fiction, romance, and adventure (fantasy/sci-fi). I'm sure there are places that offer even more catagorization than this for YA.

Its horrible. Just horrible. Both book and movie. It is most definitely not a genre romance. Yikes. That one and Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve, worst movies I ever watched and never want to see again.

I also think it applies to reading in general and not just ereaders. I've always noticed women reading more than men, even on the subway to/from work, buses, etc. when people lugged paperbacks around. Maybe women read more because they've always had a purse to stash the book/ereader and the reading habit just continued? No idea, but it's something I've always noticed in my area and in my own family and circle of friends.

I doubt that as well since MR is a forum for people with ereaders, so of course the forum will draw an unusually larger and disproportionate number of readers to skew those generic stats. Any specialized forum will have the same results.

I'll admit I quit reading for a few years because I didn't enjoy it as much with the tiny print when my already poor eyesight got older. Ereaders let me go back to reading as much as I want. Being able to adjust the font size and darkness is the biggest perk for me to use ereaders. Which is why I hate the locked down Kindle, you can't darken the fonts at all or change them to something you prefer in their locked down system.

Edit: I should add that I stick to pretty much only mystery, thrillers, horror novels, can't remember if I've ever read a romance book other than a couple of Daphne du Maurier titles 30+ years ago.

As an over-45 woman who is not a fan of romance books, I agree 100% here. I like ebooks because I can chang the font size. I read the same kind of thing I read before I was 45.

Exactly. Is anyone calling erotica consumed by men of late reproductive age and a bit older - "daddy porn"? No. So why are women readers of that age referred to as "mommies"? Has anyone actually studied whether women reading this subgenre of erotica have reproduced more than the general population? What's the basis of deciding that their primary descriptor should be "mommy"?

It's just another flavour of sexism. Related, but not the same, as people trying to describe a typical ignorant tech user as "your mom" "your grandma", or "your old aunt".

I haven't seen that one either. I don't think I want to. Tragic love stories hold no interest to me.

I read Romance as you know and Mysteries mostly cozies.
All have happy endings. Love stories never do.
