My issue with 'mommy porn' as a term is it doesn't accurately describe the type of books that folks seem to lump with it. It should either be porn which features the mommy fetish, or which far and away is read nearly exclusively by mothers. It's very easy to see if a book features a mommy fetish, and I would argue the vast majority of the books typically lumped in to 'mommy porn' do not. It's a statistics nightmare to try and conclusively prove that such a limited* yet varied** demographic is the, essentially, sole reader of said content.
*far under half the population would be mothers. Only slightly more can become mothers. ** Yet within that group you will see the gamut of the human condition, rich, poor, all races, all ethnicities, virtually all sexual orientations, etc. this is the equivalent of trying to get a large group of people to all agree on the best kind of Pizza. |

When I first heard the term in the eighties it was used to refer to porn read primarily by women, at a time when much of society still clung to the notion that sexual desire for its own sake acted out upon aggressively or even alone was not just primarily a masculine trait...but so rare in women as to be almost exclusively male. It was meant as a slap in the face to neovictorians, certain religious circles, and a misandric sliver of feminism. Across the nineties the figures on the sales of Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" series and the burgeoning sex toy sales were used to stuff that gauntlet with sand and deliver a heavier blow. Then the awful "Shades of Gray" books were written, and it was pointed out that women would even indulge in porn as sloppily written as the cookie cutter fake letters genre. I still see the term used the same way. I have, in fact used the term myself in that way. I have not (that I can recall) been in an actual verbal conversation where the "Mommy Porn" term was used to refer to romance novels as a whole. That seems to me to setting up a straw man. It's just a term invented to needle an audience the people who coined it deemed both self righteous and self deceiving. Last edited by Phogg; 05-15-2016 at 03:54 PM. |

Talking about a group of books and using 'mommy porn' to describe a phenomenon is one thing, using the term as a definitive genre is another.

I know you weren't asking me, but crime fiction is my bag, so I'll throw out a short list:
1) Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books 2) Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books 3) PD James' Adam Dalgliesh books 4) Chester Himes' Harlem Detective books 5) James Crumley's The Last Good Kiss 6) Dennis Lehane's Kenzie & Gennaro books 7) Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole books There are of course many more, but those (especially near the top of the list) always make for a good read, and in my opinion, several attain to the level of "good crime novel." Of course, there's also a classic like Crime & Punishment |

Why were the descriptions changed after people had already voted?
I'm an LGBTQ person and voted that way, but I'm not non-binary. |

Really the poll was flawed from the get go, too limited in age range, odd sexual orientation groups (though intended for gender neutrality), etc.
A better poll would break it down by decade, with 'male' 'female' and 'gender neutral'/'Non-binary'. I'd suggest starting with 20's and working up until say the 80s at which point it could just be 80+. Right now the poll really gets too little information to draw any decent conclusions. And the answers have been changed post-people voting. |

I didn't remove the one vote, because I thought the voter had probably managed to interpret the question correctly, even given the incorrect labelling. That error has now been corrected. You won't be able to vote again, but if you PM me with your preferred response I will tweak the totals. |

Well I'm over 50 and read all sorts of books but primarily romance. I also read a lot of Fan Fiction on mine as well.

I have no doubt that women (and men) over 45 also represent a huge portion of avid readers of paper books. In other words, my guess is that I think elder people (like myself) tend to read more.

Am I a bit dense in that I did not even notice that the original question was asking for our sexual orientation?
