Thank you for verifying this. I was dealing with this change in another thread. The only way that I found to enable telnet & ftp was via NickelMenu.

Oh. So Kobo knows how to do the thing we've all been requesting for years, they just don't want to. Great.

To be fair, the original infrastructure was done over a decade ago by T-Systems.

It's never been a matter of how, syncing cloud data is not difficult. It's always been a matter of where the servers are and who is paying for them. Amazon can do this easily for any customer because they already have the entirety of AWS anyway, and it sounds like Tolino also already had their own system in place before Kobo bought them. If Kobo doesn't already have any established server space for this, it probably cost more than the feature would be worth to acquire it.

Kobo has not bought Tolino. Tolino is largely owned by Thalia and other large book stores in Germany/Austria.

Well, not all. I couldn't care less. I hardly ever used the Amazon cloud for anything when I was a Kindle user, and I certainly don't miss it now. I prefer to load my books over USB.

I seem to remember quite a few stories about Kobo purchasing the Tolino ereading platform/ecosystem from Deutsche Telekom back in 2017. Going by some of the comments I've seen over the years, Kobo owns the hardware and back end while Weltbild, Hugendubel, Thalia, Libri, etc. sell ebooks within the Tolino ecosystem.

Quote:
“The handover of the ecosystem to Kobo is a sign of the advanced market development; having found a perfect partner in Deutsche Telekom to establish the business, our next step with Kobo is to grow further and in particular to uphold and expand the international e-reading standards,” said Nina Hugendubel who owns and runs Hugendubel together with her brother Maximilian.

From Wikipedia.de:

Quote:
Tolino (own spelling: tolino) is a brand name for e-book readers and tablets that have been marketed by booksellers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since 2013. 1] Since 2014, the e-book readers have also been distributed in Belgium[2], the Netherlands[3] and Italy[4]. From 2013 to the beginning of 2017, the technical marketing partner was Deutsche Telekom. Since the beginning of 2017, the devices have been further developed by the Canadian company Kobo (part of the Japanese group Rakuten). 5]
So it seems that Kobo makes Tolino branded ereaders, but doesn’t own the company.

Correct, Tolino itself is a publishing platform.

Does anyone here know where the rumor has come from that version 5 firmware is bringing back the awards? Is version 5 going to be on the new Libra Colour? How do you know this?

Thanks

Well, the new Tolinos come with firmware version 5 and via dev mode, it is possible to switch from Tolino to Kobo brand. Being in the kobo mode, the awards are indeed available.

Oh, wow, so that means people with Tolinos can see the awards in color? I really hope we get firmware v. 5!

Personally I'm not looking forward to v5 firmware given that it breaks too many things (until they get fixed if possible).
