+2 It sums up my take on the book well.

I don’t believe every one thought Anne was wonderful. I don’t think Anne thought she was wonderful herself. That’s why she is constantly striving to improve her faults. She’s banned by Diana’s mom from seeing Diana after the cordial incident, and the nosy neighbor Rachel didn’t like initially. I also don’t think she’s manipulative. I think she has a way of growing in other people’s hearts to change them, and I think her outlook on life can be infectious to those around her.

Especially: "I think her outlook on life can be infectious to those around her." Think of Mathew who was dour except with Anne.

I remember you mentioned this book before, and I have meant to read it based on your recommendation. I grew up in the Midwestern Plains along the Mississippi so Little House (and even more so Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn mentioned earlier in this thread) has a regional identity to me similar to Anne for Canadians.

I ran across the following at Amazon currently on sale for $1.99 and thought it might be of interest:

The Landscapes of Anne of Green Gables: The Enchanting Island that Inspired L. M. Montgomery by Catherine Reid

Quote:
The Landscapes of Anne of Green Gables explores L. M. Montgomery’s deep connection to the landscapes of Prince Edward Island that inspired her to write the beloved Anne of Green Gables series. From the Lake of Shining Waters and the Haunted Wood to Lover’s Lane, you’ll be immersed in the real places immortalized in the novels. Using Montgomery’s journals, archives, and scrapbooks, Catherine Reid explores the many similarities between Montgomery and her unforgettable heroine, Anne Shirley. The lush package includes Montgomery’s hand-colorized photographs, the illustrations originally used in Anne of Green Gables, and contemporary and historical photography.

Definitely of interest! There are some beautiful photographs in there, including some colourized by LMM herself in the '20s. Thanks!
