Force KFX format in eInk Kindle Oasis 2017

Hallo,

I bought a book on Amazon, which was featuring the "Enhanced Typesetting" option. After getting it on the Oasis 2017, the 9 thumbnail Pageflip was not available. On the kindle for PC the downloaded folder structure is similar to KFX-format detailed on some website. On Android the downloaded files were multiple KFX files.

Is there a possible get one file-KFX-version on Oasis 2017? I tried converting the AZW3 using calibres KFX output plugin but the tables get messed up in the process.
Is there is a way to convert the downloaded content from other platforms to an Oasis 2017 compatible KFX file?

Did you download it directly to your Kindle from Amazon, or did you download it to your PC first? If you downloaded to your PC first, you will always get an AZW3 file.

Yes, if the book is available in KFX format, that's what you should certainly get if you download the book directly from Amazon on your Kindle.

As already stated in this thread, in order to receive KFX format from Amazon you have to allow the Oasis to download the book as opposed to using "Download & transfer via USB".

Amazon continues to add new features to the KFX format. If the same book downloaded directly from Amazon in AZW3 on the Oasis and in KFX on Kindle for PC it means that particular book uses a KFX feature that your Oasis firmware does not support. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed (version 5.9.2.0.1).

If your Oasis already has the latest firmware you may need to wait for a future firmware update to support the KFX features used in that book.


Added: I am curious about the particular book involved. Would you mind sharing the ASIN?

I tried downloading it directly to the oasis. It still did not show the 9-pageflip thing. The publisher font was in it though.
On Amazon it does not say it is oasis 2017 compatible though but the old one is?
Is there a way to find out, which version of the eBook has been downloaded on the Kindle directly from the store?

Connect your Oasis to a PC via USB. Look in the "documents" folder for a file with the name and ASIN corresponding to your book. See if the file extension is .azw (MOBI format), .azw3 (KF8 format) or .kfx (KFX format). For example the file "Down and Out~ Purgatory_B01EO8D5KU.kfx" is in KFX format.

I recommend removing the book and re-downloading it using the Kindle user interface to be sure that it has been downloaded directly from Amazon.

Hi,
nothing changed even after trying downloading it again from the kindle. It is still azw(6)-format.
Even the reading sample is in azw3.
The firmware is the latest 5.9.2.
If some one has the same device, would you kindly try the reading sample?

EDIT> tried a different book with same features (enhanced typesetting and page-flip). The Flippage option appeared. the Document folder didnt show any kfx files though.

I will write amazon asking them if the book is available in KFX format.

As jhowell said, the fact that it says "Enhanced Typesetting Available" doesn't automatically mean it'll be sent in KFX format to all devices. It depends on the features of the book and the capabilities of the device.

It might sound gimmicky, but this was the only reason I got the book from their "Ecosystem". I even returned the same book from a different vendor to get this features from amazon. Alas it is not very important and the reading experience is good enough.

I tried the free sample of Intensivkurs Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie (German Edition) 8th Edition, Kindle Edition, which I believe is the book you are discussing.

The sample was delivered in KFX format to Kindle for Android and Kindle for iOS. It was delivered in KF8 (azw3) format to Kindle for PC and a Kindle Oasis 2.

Based on that I believe that my assumption was correct. That book uses a KFX feature not yet implemented in all Kindle software versions.

The list of KFX feature versions required to render that book is: CanonicalFormat=2.0, kfxgen.pidMapWithOffset=1, kfxgen.textBlock=1, reflow-section-size=6.0, reflow-style=5.0, yj_table=6.0, yj_table_viewer=2.0.

yj_table 6.0 is enhanced support for tables, not yet included in all reader software.

Hi,

first I am very thankful for you trying it out and for the information.

second, the support from Amazon just called me back. He mentioned that the "enhanced Typesetting" is not for eInk-devices. He also mentioned, that the 9-Pageflip option should be working regardless, therefore he is going to send me an updated version of the book, which should be arriving in 30 Minutes.

After waiting and redownloading multiple of times on the kindle oasis nothing has changed. So I am leaving this subject as is in the hopes for an updated version in the feature.

That is incorrect. The 9 page flip is exclusive to kfx versions. Since the Oasis gets the kf8 version, there won't be 9 page flip.

thank you for notifying. So after manually updating through USB method. I deleted the book and re-downloaded it again. It was still in AZW3 format. I hope after reaching higher adaptation of this version the ebook would be sent in KFX format to the Kindle.

The converted KFX using calibre displays some tables the same/worse as/than AZW3, in both cases partly unreadable without zooming. see the attachment. lineralizing them messes the format of the rows and columns.

It is a step forward and the KFX feels snappier.
OT: the automatic light levels seem to react better too.

Did you check in My Content and Devices to see if there is an update available? Since you said you were able to download KFX to your apps, that might not be the case, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
