Sideloading library books is so yesterday. Glad Kobo is getting onboard.

I was under the (perhaps mistaken?) impression that this was the same capability as being able to download ADE books directly on the device rather than having to load them from a PC. This is something that my BeBook Neo, which was also sold as the "Onyx Boox", could do back in 2010. My apologies if I'm mistaken about it being the same feature!

When I used this feature on my old Sony PRS-T1, it used the ereader's web browser to access the library web site. Maybe that means that Kobo is going to promote their web browser into a full and non-beta feature?

The experience on the T1 was pretty horrible and frustrating. I hope Kobo do better.

That's essentially the way it worked on the Neo, too. You could download books via any web site that would give you an ACSM file. The Neo would then do what desktop ADE does, and download the ePub via the ACSM.

If Kobo intends to add library downloads directly to the device by leveraging overdrive integration, I think they'll add an overdrive library tile to the screen as an 'app'. Enabling the beta browser for that purpose seems like a Macgyver solution.

Perhaps they have that planned and that's what's causing the delay in releasing a new firmware update for so long.

Not that they're holding back...simply that the promo probably isn't a sign of a new release being imminent. I'm thinking it might be Sept/Oct now myself. Just because that will be two years since the h2o came out.

I would hope it would be a little more seamless...like the Kindle/Overdrive library books.

Yes, I'd expect a new device later in the year. But, that might be when we get firmware with OverDrive as well. Most of the new function Kobo has released has been with a new device. Then, it is releases for the other devices.

I've just worked out why Kobo haven't released a new device. It's fish. They can't decide what to use. It can't be tuna, as everyone would accuse them of copying Amazon. So, they have to come up with something else. If they were English, it would be easy: cod. For Australians, it would barramundi. Or prawns*. If it they were completely Japanese, it would be whale**. But, what is if for Canada? Salmon maybe? Or would they skip the fish and just dip it in maple syrup?

* Australians have never thrown shrimp on a barbie.
** Yes, I know, but I rarely let facts get in the way of a good joke. And NEVER for a bad joke.

Pickerel ("Walleye" in the US). Best tasting freshwater fish up here. Mmmm... Happy thoughts.

I posited the same thought over in the Kobo forums in a thread about not hearing anything from Kobo.

Seems like a feature we should have seen by now, given how long Rakuten has owned Overdrive. Maybe there were some legal things to work out. And then the technical aspects.

I hope it's a fully functioning app like experience, which allows us to download the epub file either directly, or indirectly through the acsm file.

So, a type of pike. But "pickerel" sounds better.

The problem with my earlier post, is that I now have a picture of the Kobo production line:

The new devices are moving upstream in a maple syrup channel and there are big hairy men wearing red-checked shirts and Mounties style hats scooping them out of the syrup with their hands while singing a Monty Python song.

I'm sure that's a lot more about how my brain (doesn't) work than anyone here needed to know. And now that I've inflicted that on everyone, I might go and do some work.

I'd prefer to see a full interface rather than through the browser for library support. But, I'd like to see browser integration to allow download from other DRM supporting shops. Or even the Kobo shop. I can understand that Kobo might not want to do that, but I think that overall it would be better for them to do this.
