Kobo covers are suddenly low resolution

Hello!

I use calibre to change the cover to a different image and crop them using the prettify covers plugin so it fills the whole screen when its asleep. Im running into an issue where the covers revert to their original cover, and those covers are a lower resolution than before.

Ive tried plugging my ereader into calibre and reuploading the covers but it doesnt seem to do anything

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a solution to it? Was there an update recently?

What exactly is your process (in detail)?

I'm not sure if this is enough detail or not, let me know if you need more information

1. Drag and drop eBook into Calibre
2. Import book into Libra 2. Plug out device and plug it back in
3. Use "prettify cover" plugin to update the ratio and crop the image
4. Use KoboUtilities and "Upload covers for selected books". I leave all of the boxes unchecked. I just tried checking the option to upload the cover for kepubs but I haven't seen any changes

I just tried to add a new book to my eReader through calibre, and it doesn't display a cover on the sleep screen - there's no thumbnail either. It displays the basic cover generated by kobo with the title and file time in the center of the image and two black borders (who is also low-res when asleep). The images inside the book are fine though.

It seems like this issue is happening on all of my eBooks - sideloaded and purchased.

I have a hunch that it's taking the thumbnail image and scaling it up, but I'm not sure how to fix it

I would suggest changing your work flow to:
  1. Drag and drop the book into calibre or use Add books
  2. Update the metadata including cover images.
  3. Resize the cover. Personally, I dislike images that have been stretched to fit an aspect ratio more than I dislike letterboxed/pillarboxed images.
  4. Use either the Polish Books or Modify ePub plugin to embed the metadata and cover into the ePub.
  5. Connect your Libra 2 to calibre and Send to Device. Safely eject. Watch the books import.
  6. Reconnect your Libra 2 to calibre to update metadata that requires the database entry for the book to be created so it can be updated.

Also note that since quite a bit is cached in RAM, you may have to restart your Libra 2 before the new information will show up.

Thank you for your advice. I will try to do this in the future.

I restarted my device and that fixed the issue.

Once you've updated the cover in the Edit metadata dialog, use the Modify ePub plugin to update the cover in the eBook. Then send it to your Kobo.
