BTW: I don't know any EInk color devices under $400 that I would call GOOD.
The the OP is planning on going with something really poor (a nook) instead of color eInk.

True, it's not in his budget. That's why I hadn't commented until he compared it to a tablet of the same price.

The point is to know what you want. I think it's great that a person wants an e-reader to read novels, and that they use a tablet to read comics and PDFs and a computer to manage their e-reader library. I have no objection to that. Just as if he wants to read all his e-books on a tablet, smartphone or computer. I think that's wonderful. But I think we all know what we mean when we talk about a colour "e-reader" and it's not exactly that kind of device.

With the same brightness, light reflected from non-mirroring objects is always less harmful than looking directly into the (maybe color-filtered) light source.

There is zero harm on any visible light source similar in brightness to light reflected off brightness enhanced copier paper.

Don't stare at light bulbs, high power LEDs for torches*, lasers or the sun, but no OLED or LCD tablet is on sale that can damage your eyes.
Also some are not any brighter than the front light of an eink at full (which is pretty much the same LEDs as on an LCD backlight).

(* They have "don't point this at your eyes" or similar warnings)

That is incorrect. It's not worth trying to read on one in unshaded sunlight, but any reasonably solid shade or indoor situation it is fine. This is not a restriction that has ever had any meaning for me (it's a health hazard to sit for any length of time in direct sunlight in my area).

The OP is on a very tight budget for a colour device. Sometimes compromises are necessary. Now they're aware of the options.

You already know a device that's yet to be released is really poor?

How do you know that? $400 isn't small, and $450 exceeds it by only 12.5% - and that's not much

Aha - so only weirdos get headaches and cramps when they look directly into such light sources while reflected light doesn't bother them.
Or what - haven't you heard of it yet? Or does that not fit into your worldview?

Unless B&N really ups the firmware, yes, it's going to be poor.

I've used iPads, iPhones, laptops, TVs, computer screens, and a portable DVD player. You just have to adjust the brightness so it's not a bother.

An eInk screen is not the only light source that's not a bother. Turn up the front light too bright and an eInk Reader is a bother.

Ah. "Unless." So you really don't know. Moreover, "really poor" is virtually bound to be excessive judgment on a 2023 release.

My eyes water when I look at a very dimly lit tablet, but not at a brightly lit EInk device.
And since I switched everything (monitor, TV, ....) to reflection (projector) I no longer have conjunctival irritation.

I think there is a need for a survey, aimed at e-reader users, on why they prefer to read on an e-reader rather than a tablet or smartphone. I am curious to read the answers.

(It's probably already done, but I don't feel like looking for it).
