Yes. Though Archos used to be worse than Amazon, and I think the 1.8" HDD in the Apple iPods that used them are unusable in anything else, you can't even re-partition. Custom drive firmware. Though DOES let you remove the "Sent from my iPhone" signature..

It is weird to install an update, only to wait for ‘the next couple of weeks’ to see any new features.

It’s not just weird it’s sneaky. They also sneak in a forced firmware update that messes with potential jailbreaks. This isn’t for our benefit. It’s all about how to lock us into the way they want us to do things.

The vast majority of devices aren't jail broken. I doubt it's a blip on their radar.
