Thanks. I use Windows and I haven't used a plug-in. I had found out how to decrypt a directory for other epubs, but not for BN books.

Also, I love cabbages is another fine blog to explore for more fun with software dealing with circumvention. Especially in the comments by maelcum when he/she talks about a manual. Better yet, the plug-ins with Calibre make some things even easier. But figuring out the process can be a bit challenging. |

Is there a website out there that explains how to run a script? I haven't a clue.

Only thing I have seen different is that some people have made calibre plugins to remove DRM or they have guis from already available open source programs that were formerly command line based only that can do batch possessing.
Also the guides are somewhat helpful and have screenshots which is somewhat more convenient than your typical source forge/Google code page. |

What is the difference if any between the .py extension and .pyw extension? I have seen scripts that seem like they are the same with both extensions.
Thanks |

I may not have this exactly right, but I believe PY has to be run in a command line and PYW is a Python-executable (will run outside of a command window).

.py scripts are regular scripts that you run on the command-line.
.pyw scripts are "python widgets", which means you can double-click to open them, and a window with buttons you can press to select stuff and do actions will show up, just like a mini GUI app. |

Thanks for that. So can I just change the .py to .pyw and have it work?

I'm afraid not. Python widgets are written in a special way that incorporates the original .py code but adds extra stuff for the buttons and such.
You could, however, learn to write up your own widgets using existing scripts and making them easier to use, which is exactly how some of the current set of tools we don't talk about on this forum came into being. |

Again, I recommend (unless you really know what you are doing) staying away from bolt.org. |

Yes. Only if doing a format conversion as well. No. The longer answers are: Yes, for everything except books bought in Apple's iBooks store, as there are no scripts to remove the DRM from them. You need to do a google search for a blog by a chap named Alf, 'Apprentice' to the Dark Reverser. There you'll find links to a zip file of all the tools needed to removed DRM, and instructions in the ReadMes in the archive. A new version 2.3 of the archive has just been released. Removing DRM doesn't affect the layout of Mobipocket or ePub ebooks. It shouldn't affect eReader ebooks either, although some badly made eReader books might suffer slightly. However, if you also need to convert to a different format (say, using Calibre), then the formatting might change a little. No. |

Interesting. I just discovered that I don't have to unzip zipped files in Windows 7/64. I just delete one plugin, expand the master zip file and chose the zip file within, then add the new plugin. Presto.
I'll bet you guys already knew this, huh? Last edited by speedlever; 12-03-2010 at 11:45 AM. |
