It's time for choosing December's topic!
All ideas are appreciated; just post! We're very flexible with our monthly topic; it can be a topic, theme, category or whatever else. This can also be collaborative so any little kernel of an idea or direction is great. So what ideas do you have? astrangerhere has recommended Winter Wonderland for December or January, which idea has already been discussed a little. It sounds like a fun topic to me, and so long as anyone from the summering southern hemisphere is okay with it (and I see AnotherCat has already commented approvingly) I think it'd make a great one for December. |

Happy new year!
I’ll post the nomination thread a little later but first we have to take care of the little matter of choosing a topic. I’ll think over some to post but in the meantime if anyone else has an idea then let us know. |

Happy New Year! I was thinking about themes related to January and the start of a new year but had trouble finding nominations around new beginnings or resolutions. Maybe someone has a more creative way to describe or broaden it. Maybe something related to time in general?

That sounds good! I was just looking at previous Januarys and I'm surprised we've never done a topic related to any of that for a January before. I'll keep thinking but so far I'm not having a lot of luck thinking up any creative or clever topic titles for it, although we could go with simply 'Resolutions', or an English translation of auld lang syne such as 'Times Long Past' which could really go in a different direction or 'Days Gone By' which could go in another direction.

Two more I've thought of, both related to time in music:
-If I Could Turn Back Time. This would be a very different category from the other possibilities, probably more focused on characters with regrets or characters trying to change past actions or mistakes, although it could be interpreted in a few other ways too. -Weaving Time in a Tapestry. This is a lyric from Simon and Garfunkel's Hazy Shade of Winter. It's pretty vague on what the month would actually be about, but it would be a pretty topic title with various possibilities for inspiration. I could see it being about books with multiple time periods, or books about time travel, or books that aren't about time travel but instead of following a linear timeline jump back and forth in time to tell the story in a non-linear way, or if someone is inspired by words in a title it might be a story that has something to do with weaving or sewing, or tapestries or blankets, or simply the word time or words about time in the title. I like the second one! I like the Bangles version of that song from the Less Than Zero soundtrack in the 80s.

All right, done! So we’ll have ‘Weaving Time in a Tapestry’ for January. The nomination thread will be up soon. I like the Bangles version too.

The Bangles’ version of Hazy Shade of Winter unexpectedly came on today in the bubble tea shop. I smiled thinking about it.

I've thought of two new possible ideas so far for February.
The first is 'May You Live in Interesting Times'. It's an old Chinese curse that's pertinent in the times we're living in. For a topic, it could be about books set in particularly 'interesting' times- wars, plagues, uprisings, catastrophes, revolutions, etc., or maybe circumstances of a smaller scope that still nevertheless majorly affect the characters of the story. The second is 'In Sickness and in Health'. This one would have a dual meaning. This topic could inspire nominations that have to do with sickness (and/or health) whether in only an individual or in a larger group, or it could inspire nominations that have to do with weddings, vows or other lifelong commitments. |

I've had another idea - 'A Flight of Fantasy' or 'Flights of Fantasy'. This could mean books that have a fantasy genre element to them. Or it could mean a character who is prone to flights of fantasy, daydreaming or otherwise imaginative but unrealistic ideas, or a character who has a single flight of fantasy central to the story. Or it could mean a book to do with flying. Or it could be a book with 'flight', 'fantasy' or some similar synonym to either of those in the title.
