Why do modern book covers suck? - Page 3

Both of the versions of the Neuromancer cover are hideously bad. The other older covers aren't anything to praise either.

I think the move to ebooks is driving covers to simpler, bolder designs so that books are distinguishable on screens. But I also think some people are looking at older covers with their nostagia goggles on.

I think the reason is because publishers want the book cover to show up well on an ereader or ereading app. It seems like most modern covers are generic looking, with a base color background and exaggerated type font for the title.

I'd gauge today's covers on today's books. New covers on old books is an economic thing, as others have discussed. If you are trying to sell your book (as a new book would), you'll put more effort into the cover. If you are just trying to "keep you book on the shelf for the existing audience" - then you won't bother

Go look at many of the (SF) covers from the 60's and before
