So called Wireless charging (really inductive) is a sort of fashion statement on phones and tablets and makes less sense than cable or a dock.
Tablets ought to have an coax socket or dock or both to optionally charge/power while the USB is being used, especially in USB2Go mode. Some tablets do and it doesn't contravene EU directives as long as the USB port can also charge it.

Wireless charging is better for my wife. She has Psoriatic Arthritis and trying to plug the cable into her phone is difficult. Being able to set it on a dock is helpful for people like her even if it wasn't originally designed for the disabled.

I understand appeal of the dock (read while it is charging) but that is not my use case, and I have multiple charging pads available that work with multiple devices, which is my use case.

At this point my only USB-C chargeable device (apart from laptop) is Kindle Fire, which I have only ever charged with charging pad, so while I have USB-C charging cables, I’ve never used them, and it would be okay if I didn’t have to, ever. So I’ll pay for the wireless charging feature.

When I click around, I see ad-supported PW5 for $140; without ads for $160.

So another benefit for the Signature edition. So, in reality, a $30 difference for 32 GB of RAM (instead of 8 GB), auto-light sensing and wireless charging.

Actually the "standard" Paperwhite 5 has the ads and non-ads options ($140 and $160). The Kids edition comes with a the cover but, apparently, no ads -- so (unless the Kid's edition is restricted or has different firmware) you get a cover for the same price as a no-ads standard Paperwhite 5. That seems odd.

Oh well.

I suppose some people will want to save $20, if they can find the page to order it. I really think they should just kill SO outright, it is always a negative for them in reviews, and I doubt it costs them many sales. We could argue whether ‘hiding’ the page is greed, or mercy, or some of each.

The only thing that is different is that SO Kindle requires swipe to unlock as well as showing ad on Lock Screen. There are no ads once it is unlocked, which was the case prior to the recent updates. And in any case, you will still see ‘promoted’ content when browsing Kindle Store.

They do have a bundle for the PWSE, dock, fabric cover, no ads for $230, so $20 less than above. Similar bundles with the leather or cork covers are $10-$20 more. The bundle is eligible for the 20% off trade-in too, so might save even more that way if the trade-in 20% doesn't cover the accessories when purchased separately.
