I'm not sure if that really is ePub or it's iBooks. When people say it's for an iPad, they usually mean iBooks and as we know, iBooks code is not always ePub. So it might not just drop in neatly into a Reader using ADE without some work done to it.

You're not alone, I also primarily use .mobi. I also convert everything in my library to .epub as well (just in case I need it later on), since Calibre makes doing so easy. I just don't get complaints about formats since with Calibre it doesn't really matter, you just convert it to whatever you want/need.

Note that that set is of the original editions, with a screwy time-line because of being written over a thirty year period. It's also only available outside the US, since the author doens't have the US ebook rights.

The "New Millennium" edition contain slightly tweaked text that makes the whole series work on a timeline starting in early 2008.
