I got hooked on The Young and The Restless after my niece got a temporary role on that show. They are addictive.

No question about that. But the same is not true for Anna Karenina. Even if Anna reads a bit like the soap of its time.

I just uploaded an epub version of Anna Karenina.

I was reading the Manybooks ePub version, but really disliked the way it was formatted, so I downloaded HTML EBook #1399 from PG and re-formatted.

Features:
- Fontin Font embedded
- Multilevel TOC
- Smart quotes
- Indented paragraphs with no spacing between them
- Drop caps

I normally proofread a book before uploading, but this time I made an exception because it's this month's club book.

I would like to add some "editor notes" to Anna Karenina: the translation of certain passages and expressions that are in german or french in the original. Tolstoy didn't bother to translate them and I feel I am missing something. Does anyone know if there's something on this out there? I googled a bit but found nothing.

Just uploaded V2 of Anna Karenina with corrections.
I made a list of expressions in french and german (and a couple in latin, if I am not mistaken) (see attachment if you are interested)
Tostoy was certainly not writing for the masses, unless he thought that common people spent half their time speaking in french and german like his aristocratic characters....

The Pevear/ Volokhnsky translation at Amazon has footnotes for these and other contemporary cultural references.

I have a suggestion. Next time we have a vote on eBooks that are supposed to be free, can we make sure they are 100% free and not a mess like Anna is? It's a mess in that there are different translations/versions and not all are free. So to get the version wanted, money may have to be used. That makes Anna, not 100% free.

Lots of folks are reading the Garnett version which is free, it's your choice if you want to buy a version that's not free.

I don't remember any requirement that the book be free (for instance 1984 isn't free in the US it's still under copyright [$8.59 @ Amazon, $9.99 @ Sony]) just that it be in the public domain in the US or Canada.

Now if you want to argue that a translation be agreed upon ahead of time that might have some merit.

If the book is supposed to be free in the US and Canada, then how did 1984 get nominated in the first place since it clearly is not free in the USA?

As for the translation being agreed upon ahead of time, that I agree with. But in a case like this, only the freely available translations can be used as the idea was to make this month's book free.

I am both reading and listening to it. I read in bed, but listen to the Librivox version while at the gym. Almost finished Book 1. Whew, it's a big'un!

Then the rule should have been it had to be public domain and freely available everywhere not just Canada or the US. The criteria said public domain, not that it had to be free everywhere.

Well, I'm 30 pages from finishing the Maude translation I bought for $1.79. I'm certainly not going to re-read it just to have read the free Garnett translation. I'm guessing that whatever translation folks decided to go with the overall story will come out the same. What I've compared between Maude and Garnett weren't THAT different and didn't change what was being told, just how it was worded.

The edition or translation of a book one decides to read should be one's own choice. The membership of this book club is too varied to try otherwise.

Especially with translations. It's a sticky subject. Try telling everyone to read a free translation when some may prefer to pay more for a certain translation or the footnotes, etc. that accompany it. Also, try telling everyone to read a more expensive translation when a free one could be just as suitable. Choice is good.

But while we're on the subject of paying for books, I'm not a fan of the book selections being decided by their price tag. Of course, if a book is super expensive, I would understand. And the months where there is a specific effort, like this month and the public domain requirement, then it's fine. But I've seen other months where the discussion during nominating and voting has turned to which of the nominations are cheap, or posters encouraging others to not choose a book because it's not free or extremely cheap. I don't like that.

And on a similar subject, I've also sometimes noticed the discussion during nominating and voting turning to which books are available as ebooks in certain areas. I don't like this either. As I've understood the rules of the club that I've read in the first post of the monthly nomination threads, a book doesn't have to be available as an ebook anywhere to be selected, let alone in a certain area. At least, nowhere have I noticed that mentioned.

I understand this is a digital reading site and that most of us may read most of our books digitally, but if it isn't an official requirement of a club selection then I don't think it's relevant. As much as I'd rather read an ebook, if the selection one month was a book I could only buy physically and I wanted to read it for the club, then I would suck it up and buy the physical book or physically check it out from my local library. I wouldn't expect everyone else not to vote for that selection just because I'd rather buy the book electronically. If the overwhelming general consensus disagrees with me on this, then I'd suggest the rules be changed to clarify the ebook requirement. Then I'd be fine with it. Otherwise though, I prefer that the selection be decided on what interests the most people in a particular genre each month, not which is the absolute cheapest or available as an e-book in Antarctica.
