One good thing I'll say about Apple is when iOS gets a major upgrade, it ports over to many previous generation devices. My iPod touch 4 came with iOS 4 and was then upgraded to iOS 5. When iOS 6 is released, it'll get that upgrade too; which will probably be its last major upgrade.

Are we really going to bring this up? You're as bad as that Katie lady who comes in here whining about SD cards and not being able to subscribe to Prime without a credit card to charge to.

Since the standard new Kindle Fire has the same hardware and screen size as the previous model, it is as simple as slapping it onto our kindleupdates folder and applying it (and if not, it's going to be VERY easy to modify it to do so since Amazon HAS to release the source code). We have been using these new TI updates made for the new one for months now, and even at 1.2 GHz which works smoothly.

Another thing to point out is that Amazon has totally redone their UI across all applications.

As for iOS, I hate it that we don't get simple features added to our device. iPhone 4 owners don't get navigation, we don't have mirroring, and we don't have Siri. iPhone 3GS users are simply getting the base iOS and will soon realize that they won't be able to take advantage of much and will be switching back to iOS 5 due to slowness - Which is a typical problem when upgrading iOS devices that are at the brink of getting deprecated. The iPod Touch of last year always lacks features of the new model to the point where you're forced to update. You can't even take advantage of the camera on it because it's that bad. How many apps on the App Store aren't camera based anyway?

If Apple can put iOS 6 on an iPhone 3GS, there is no reason at all for them not to put it on the orginal iPad which can handle it much better then the 3GS. In fact, the 3GS is going to be very crippled with iOS 6.

That is why it's just getting the base of it. The original iPad started getting slow with iOS 5 and many people went back to iOS 4 for that reason. Same thing happened with iPhone 3G. The 3GS will be fine with most apps that are not games or use resources heavily, but it would cripple the first generation of the iPad which wouldn't be able to run tablet apps very efficiently anymore.

I hope there will be updates for the original Fire to bring it into alignment with the upgraded one and whatever features it has. The only difference is a faster CPU and more storage. Seems to me that makes it a no brainer to update them both to the same level, fewer issues for CS to deal with then. But we'll see (as with the '3.4' rumors concerning Kindle Keyboard). However I don't think they have said that the new Fire 'non-HD' has TTS, and it definitely doesn't have the audiobook highlight feature.

Note that the Fire does have a TTS engine (Pico) but the Kindle reading app doesn't use it. But Android apps that look for it can use it (Mantano, Moon+, ezPDF, etc.). Pico is not as good as some other TTS engines on Android (SVOX, IVONA), which are quite good and much better than Kindle has. It will be interesting to see what TTS engine Fire HD will use and whether you can install a replacement if you don't like it, or if one can install additional voices for different languages, etc.
