serif vs sans serif
Hi - brand new here and I am interested in setting the type font to Garamond and want to know how.
As an ex typographer I understand that folks over a certain age read serifed type more easily - hence my search. As a rank beginner I appreciate any advice. |

Good to have your company, Ajeffrey. Interesting point, so I gave it a little thought and just compared my reader (most books avec serif) print with serif and a couple of pieces here and there in my files sans serif. I think I prefer serif text in ebook and in print, but on a bigger screen -- forums like this one, for instance -- sans serif seems to me to be more comfortable. Mind you, I'm no spring chicken and the old eyes aren't what they once were and -- until a decade or so -- had become accustomed to serif print. So this may well be far from the consensus here. Very best wishes. Neil

Hi neilmarr the expression rather than avec serif is usually "serif" and then "sans serif" (without serif) and I take your point re: headings in sans serif - thanks for the interest. I have finally worked out how to read text in the font I prefer - Garamond

For large bodies of text reproduced at high quality (i.e. greater than 120ppi for arm's length reading) serif faces are generally more readable. On the other hand, single lines of a few words (e.g. headings, wall signs, ...) and san serif is easier to read quickly. When arm's length display is relatively low resolution (e.g. almost all CRT and many LCD displays), serifs fail to render well making san serif preferable.
