Here was a baby of eighteen months with a personality writ large across the dimpling, chubby cheeks and the pale-blue eyes. Pale blue they were then, chips of china—old Nankin. Nineteen years changed them to gray, and the red of her hair tarnished copper. It requires nineteen years to do these things effectually. But the personality was there then; that did not change. Keightley had caught the forceful chin, the sympathetic mouth, the restless, unfathomable eyes that fixed a gaze on you and left you in a tremble of anticipation
