Robert Hugh Benson (1871–1914)
The Sentimentalists (1906)
This was Monsignor Benson’s first novel with a contemporary setting. The central character is an egoistic poseur who, while very charming, wreaks havoc to himself and those around him. (Probably a narcissistic personality disorder?) His catholic friends take drastic measures to cure him.
There are some wonderfully satirical passages.
I’ve had a lot of trouble with this book.
It was downloaded, a page at a time from HathiTrust. Once reassembled, I found that several pages were missing from the scan. Google Books are using the same copy, with the same missing pages. Fortunately, these are not essential. I’ve indicated the gaps and will post a revised version if I can find a paper copy.
The original typesetting was poor in places and I have corrected a number of obvious typos.
