Well, moving to a much more modern (and yet set in 1928 Melbourne) book, I'd like to nominate
Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood. This is the first of the Phryne Fisher books and the start of a superb series. The series is witty, irreverent, and Miss Phryne is very definitely larger than life.
