Same problem, while using Calbre 2.24. Found this perfect answer: use u'L’'. After restart, it becomes u'L\u2019' and it works. Two questions:

do I remove the (original) u'L\xb4' ?
what should i use for D’ ? I suppose u'D’'. Am I right?
