In the 5th Century BCE Thucydides wrote the first book recognized as a true history by later historians. It chronicles the first twenty years of a twenty-six year long war between two alliances of Greek city-states: one lead by Athens and the other lead by Sparta. Thucydides was a general in the war but his narrative stops suddenly in the twentieth year. What happened to him remains a matter of speculation.
